PHILOSOPHY
The main philosophy of Southland is to provide and maintain a high quality of life within a warm, supportive, friendly and sensitive atmosphere where relationships between individuals will be affectionate and caring.
It is the function of all involved to ensure at all times, that the dignity, privacy and the basic human right of self-respect of the individual is recognised and maintained in a safe environment. We further believe in a holistic approach in the care in our residents and value the customs and spiritual beliefs of the individuals.
At all times we strive for professionalism and appropriate attitudes in our communication with the residents' relatives, members of the public and professional colleagues. The individual's right to choose and make decisions are recognised. When decisions need to be made on behalf of the resident, these are done with their best interests in mind. Where possible, residents' are allowed normal domestic experiences, which are within their potential and capacity. Some residents' help with a large range of tasks such as laying tables, washing up and making of their own beds.
STAFFING
The staff are the most valuable resource of our home. The home manager has carefully selected staff to ensure that high standards of care is mantained at all times. All staff prior to starting employment have an enhanced (CRB) Criminal Record Bureau and (POVA) Protection Of Vulnerable Adults check. Each member of staff, irrespective of their role can offer a great deal to the residents' through sharing of skills. All staff are expected to be involved in the individual care plans of the residents's.
This will include the preperation of a care plan by constantly assessing and reviewing the care needs of the individual. They will possess a high level of patience, tact and understanding and it will be sensitive to the needs of that individual person.
All the staff in the home are given the opportunity of continuous training and development. A high percentage of our staff have gained NVQ's levels 2 and 3 in Care. Staff are expected to undergo one week's induction course when they are newly recruited. In service-training is continuously provided and organised by the manager. Staff are also expected to attend training courses and work shops at local collages. All staff are expected to maintain good working relationships with all professional and specialist services.
